Beatrice is introduced in the graduation scene of the play, and is portrayed as being a very witty and clever womanhood. She frequently plays with words to win arguments or to prove her point. For example, when a the messenger informs her that Benedick is a victor to a lord, a man to a man, stuffed with all honorable virtues she quickly replies, It is so indeed, he is no less than a stuffed man, but for the stuffing - well, we are all mortal. This type of attitude and wit in a woman may have shocked Shakespearean audiences, as during the succession this play was originally performed women had little power over men and were seen as second class citizens.
