The principal fear of the main character is letting his wife and kids widow and fatherless respectively. And the other fear and not less heavy, is to accept the fact that his son is dead.
To sum up, the two most important issues to highlight are the irony and merciless caused of fears. The irony is shown when the bank clerk says: his children made fatherless and it turns that it is the father who becomes childless because of scaring of dying ,so he defends himself to survive of the robbery. When the narrator says: Mercy was the unknown word, this is because the young men are afraid of falling in poverty, so they will not have mercy on the old man or anybody. No matter what they do, they want to wreak in their society. To conclude, I think the fear takes control of their lives, also causes indifferences, heartlessness, materialism and selfishness.
