Being the police adviser to a high school does make the officer a school official. This would allow the officer to search because they do overhear a suspicion that the student has violated the law and school rule. The officer can ask the student for permission to search the car or have a school official search the car since the suspicion of a student having a handgun is a danger to the school and breaking school rules and the law.
